How We Got Here

Urania has been a long time in the making, as has the LGBT+ homeland movement. We explore that here:

  • Prior to 2018: Before Urania, there had been a previous attempt at an LGBT+ state, the Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands, established in the early 2000s off the coast of Australia. The Kingdom fought for gay marriage in Australia, and dissolved in late 2017 following the legalisation of gay marriage. The Gay and Lesbian Kingdom was a great influence on the Princess and helped create the formative idea for the Principality of Urania.
  • Christmas 2018: The Princess gives 'the Uranian Declaration' calling for a homeland for LGBT+ people to promote their interests, concerns, and safety. Laying claim to Ives Palace, named for George Cecil Ives, founder of the LGBT+ secret society "The Order of Chaeronea", the Princess began formulating the flag, coat of arms, and constitution over the coming months.
  • February 2019: Urania grows to 15 citizens, and in response Princess George I declares the expansion of Urania beyond the walls of Ives Palace, to include Nightingale Palace and Wilde Square. This area is later named Magnushalden, after pioneer of LGBT+ psychology and study, Magnus Hirschfeld. At the same time, the Princess creates the Ives Cross, an award for those who have shown examplary work for the advancement of LGBT+ people. Following the collapse of conditions for LGBT+ people in Chechnya, Princess George I writes to the Russian Ambassador demanding answers. As of yet, no answers have been given.
  • April 2019: The principality swells to 25 citizens and talks begin for hosting a democratic review of the Principality. The result of this is the "Union Revolution", which saw the Principality of Urania become the Federation of Uranian States, giving a 'state' to each of the main LGBT+ identities. This lasted 49 days before Princess George I declared it a failure for improving democracy and reverted to the Principality with an aim to host elections in the future. During this time, the Princess managed to successfully lobby the European Parliament's LGBT+ group to speak out about the poor treatment of LGBT+ people in Brunei.
  • July 2019: Activity in the Principality falls quiet as senior members of the Government resign for personal problems. Princess George I visits London Pride meeting citizens and activists alike. At the end of July, the Princess calls a formal hiatus for the Uranian government in light of the loss of senior aides, but vows to continue working to promote charitable LGBT+ causes.
  • February 2020: Following a continual effort by the Princess, George I declares the Second Uranian State in early February, calling for a new flag, constitution and vision. Appointing new Ministers, the Principality formally resumes promotion of LGBT+ facts, history, events, and causes on a full scale.
